It is very rare to see a celebrity spend more than a few hours in jail. Even rarer is seeing a celebrity be arrested and sent to prison for more than 30 days. Grammy award winning singer Lauren Hill was arrested and charged with failing to pay her taxes. She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 3 months in federal prison back in July. Well now Brendan Spaar has learned that she has been released and is now subject to one year probation with three months under house arrest. The underlying crime was failure to pay taxes on 1.8 million dollars of income earned from 2005 - 2007. If she had a good accountant she would have probably only had to pay about 10 percent of that which comes to under $200,000. I know that sounds like a lot but those of us who are not celebrities end up paying double that percentage. May this serve as a lesson to all of you. Uncle Sam is going to get your money, even if you are one of the 1%. Here's to hoping that Lauren Hill releases another album and tours to support it.
How many of you watched the NFL Super Bowl halftime show last year? If you, like Brendan Spaar, did then you would have seen M.I.A. give the middle finger (or flip the bird) at a camera during the live performance. Some have said this is just as bad as Justin Timberlake and the wardrobe malfunction of super bowl past. The NFL is suing M.I.A. for $1.5 million dollars alleging that she broke her contract by tarnishing the leagues good image and reputation. M.I.A. believes that the dancers that Madonna hired for her show were dancing in a sexually provacative manner and were not fined. The singer asks in a YouTube video why her finger is worse than a bunch of high school girls striking a sexually provacative pose. Her lawyer, Howard King, is encouraging fans to send the NFL examples of how its players, coaches, and staff have damaged or destroyed the NFL's good image. Does anyone remember Michael Vick or Aaron Hernandez? They may have done more damage to the image than a simple gesture of a finger ever could.
Pop star Selena Gomez was all set to play Russia when she found out this week that her visa request has been denied. I guess VISA is everywhere you want to be as long as you don't want to be in Russia. Brendan Spaar just made a joke. Selena Gomez is known for supporting gay rights leading some to believe that Russian authorities have banned her from the country under their new contraversial law banning "propaganda on nontraditional sexual relationships." John Becker wrote this on the LGBTQ (wtf is Q??) blog Bilerico.com: "The Russian government is clearly on edge and aware of the bruising its reputation has taken in the wake of their anti-LGBT crackdown."
In an effort to keep her name in the news, Miley Cyrus will once again steam things up when her new album comes out later this year. The album, called Bangerz, will feature her sex charged song Wrecking Ball where, if you've seen the music video, she gets rather intimate with construction equipment. Brendan Spaar discovered that her new album cover will feature a stripped down Miley Cyrus nearly nude. Do you think Miley Cyrus has daddy issues?
Britney Spears, 31, from Louisiana, is making a comeback this week. Unfortunately her comeback single leaked out a few days early online. The name of the new single is "Work Bitch" and Brendan Spaar wonders if that title was meant to be shocking. If you want to hear the song early, click on the source link below. If you'd rather wait and hear it the more traditional way, it will be available for download on iTunes Tuesday and the new album from Britney is scheduled to be released in November.
With all the news surrounding the weird dance that Miley Cyrus was doing during the MTV VMAs, Brendan Spaar has to ask the question that is on everyone's mind: What is twerking?? Apparently ABC News found a Phd Professor of exercise (I guess you really can get a graduate degree in football) Michelle Olson who explained that twerking is "a combination movement involving a deep squat and a pelvic tilt." The good doctor did caution against over-twerking saying that it "might throw out the lower back or make the knees creak." One thing that this article does not explain is where the dance came from. The dance actually originated in New Orleans Louisiana back in 1993, before Miley was even born!
The world will never hear Linda Ronstadt sing again. That's because, as was announced to the AARP, the singer has Parkinson's disease. Brendan Spaar remembers Ronstadt's hit song Hurt So Bad. Other songs include You're No Good and and Don't Know Much. The last album to be released from the iconic singer came out in 2006 and featured the Cajun singer Ann Savoy.
That's right readers, tomorrow night MTV will air the bare minimum it needs to in order to keep its Music Television namesake. That's when we will see actual music videos on television, if only for a few hours. If you are like Brendan Spaar and remember a time when all that MTV aired were music videos then you will want to tune in to relive the past. Stephen Colbert has already made it rather public that the surprise guest of the night will be Daft Punk (so try to act surprised!). TMZ also showed Joey Fatone (the Fat One) landing in New York last night so an NSYNC reunion may be in the works too. We already know that Justin Timberlake will be accepting an award for Best Musician that very rarely produces music anymore. What other surprises should we look forward to? Macelmore will be showing off his Thrift Shop clothes and Robin Thick will be answering why his song of the summer is so catchy.
Rapper Chris Brown was none too happy last night when he went on a Twitter rant about the community service hours that the court assigned him. Brown, as Brendan Spaar remembers, is on probation for beating singer Rhianna's face in back in 2009 shortly before the Grammy's. As a result, he was sentenced to community service and 5 years of probation. It appears that no one explained to CB what probation was all about. You are not to be arrested or charged with any crime while you are on probation. Unfortunately for Brown, he was charged with a hit-and-run accident, violating his probation, and sentencing Brown to an additional 1,000 hours of community service.
This all leads to the twitter rant. Brown went on Twitter Thursday night and posted such gems as "Nigga done 6 months community service wit (sic) police and the DA racist ass crying to the system that I didn't do it. Fuck the SYSTEM!"
Chris Brown will not be scoring any points with police, law enforcement, or English majors with his latest Twitter rants. At least now he has something new to rap about.
Did anyone watch the Grammy Awards last night? Brendan Spaar is happy to see that Alternative music is winning awards. Artists like Justin Bieber, Rhianna, and Katy Perry were shut out last night. There were also some great musical performances. If you missed the Lumineers or Jack White, you should check them out on YouTube. All in all it was a boring affair outside of a few performances. LL Cool J's colaboration at the end was interesting but his hosting was lack luster. There also weren't as many "Grammy moments" as we were told to expect. It was worth watching but if you missed it, you didn't miss much. One person that seemed to be enjoying themselves was Kelly Clarkson. Check out the photo where she phobombs Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi.
